The Sabina Broadhead and Thomas Birks House
18 Taylor Street
This house, built between 1871 and 1876, belonged to Sabina Broadhead, wife of Thomas Heath Birks, agent and bookkeeper for the Wright-Scott family, and one of the founders and presidents of the Hull Iron and Steel Foundry. As their agent, Birks played an important role in the innumerable property deals in the city of Hull and the surrounding region. Sabina was born in England and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1858. She died in 1925, but the house remained in Broadhead hands until 1950. Sited slightly back from the street, it is still noteworthy as one of the oldest houses in the historic Brewery Creek district.
