The sources for the subject-matter were standard reference works and illustrated publications of the day, including Canadian Scenery (1842), containing the sketches of W.H. Bartlett, and J.J. Audubon's The Birds of America (1840-1844), as well as periodicals, such as Picturesque Canada and Keramic Studio. Some of the sources provided general inspiration, while others were followed closely by the artists. |
